I have taught music in pre-school and elementary schools for over ten years. My teaching is interdisciplinary. The songs and movement activities I use encourage knowledge of science, language and math skills, and emphasize creativity and exploration. I play acoustic guitar and provide rhythm instruments for the children to use. The music we make together is immediate and accessible.
In further support of classroom studies, I have also done songwriting with children (4-6 year olds) both in a private Reggio Emilia pre-school program and in a public school setting.
Making music is very empowering to young children. Music strengthens skills across the academic disciplines and creates a shared sense of community. Here are some skills a quality music program helps to expand:
- listening and response
- imaginative visualization
- auditory and kinesthetic experience of patterns
- experience with language; rhyme, alliteration, stressed/unstressed syllables, vocabulary expansion
Classes are generally 30-45 minutes long.
